FORECOURT WORK SERIES - EPISODE TWO

Released: December 2010

Replacing a MID sign: safer working on a forecourt

Xmo Strata's latest training video is now available to view online.

In this edition Xmo Strata employees explain the process of safely removing and replacing a forecourt MID sign. The episode discusses the hazards associated with lifting heavy sign components, isolating electrics and working on operational sites.

By sharing the episodes in this series, the company hopes to improve safety, share information on mitigating risks at source and promote safer working practices to the wider industry.

FORECOURT WORK SERIES - EPISODE ONE

Released: December 2009

Safer setting up: traffic management and site safety

A new training video, previewed at our 2009 Safety Day, is now available to be viewed here.

This initial video forms part of a new series of training aids produced by Xmo Strata. It has been designed to highlight the risks found on sites across all areas of the business, and identifies how they can be overcome by a more proactive attitude towards site safety.

This episode focuses on site set-up, particularly addressing the issues encountered on and around a busy petrol forecourt.

Safety is not a competitive issue and Xmo Strata is happy to share this footage with the wider industry in the hope that it can prevent accidents and promote safer working environments.

TRAINING VIDEO - KNIFE SAFETY

Released: September 2010

It was identified in 2008 that 66% of Xmo Strata incidents that resulted in harm were related to blade cuts.

Since then, engineers have been involved in the glove selection process and the company has introduced a glove checklist which details glove ratings and suitability for various tasks. Subsequently all JSA/JHA/Safety Method Statements now include a minimum glove rating for every task.

In January 2010, we banned the use of fixed blade knives on all Xmo Strata sites.

Xmo Strata has now completed over 250,000 hours of work since its last blade cut incident, but is still ensuring that site staff are aware of potential hazards in this area.

This very short video clip is used to support a toolbox talk on hand protection and knife selection. The actual toolbox talk - delivered by Area Supervisors to all engineers - covers detailed instructions on the use of the knives featured in the clip.

The clip is not designed to be comprehensive, or to be used commercially; but more to make it memorable and support a physical demonstration.

CONFERENCE OPENER

Produced: July 2005

This video was produced and used as an introduction and atmosphere livener at our December 2005 health & safety awareness conference; it was played to set the mood while delegates took their seats.

Xmo Strata has been developing its use of moving image for a number of years; this one was the first. Please see The power of the moving image - an article which appeared in the company's July-September newsletter - for further information on future video plans.

The two minute video gives an impression of a typical Xmo Strata working environment, in this instance on an operational forecourt.

You may spot a few differences, notably in the signage being fitted, the equipment being used, the development of safety practices, or the branding of the companies involved. This just goes to show the changes in the industry over the last few years. Even some of the staff look considerably younger!
