Kevin Cully, Area Supervisor at Xmo StrataName:

Kevin Cully

Job title:

Area Supervisor

Before starting at Xmo Strata:

I worked for another sign company who unfortunately didn't survive in this competitive industry.

My work at Xmo Strata includes

Allocating workload to installers, training and supervising sign maintenance projects.

Training needed to complete my work:

In line with company standards, I am expected to have all qualifications that installation and sign maintenance teams have, as well as ongoing training that relates to the delivery of toolbox talks, safety audits and both motivating and disciplining site teams as necessary.

The IOSH managing safely course was particularly pertinent in helping me manage unforseen hazards that we sometimes encounter and encourage our teams to assess and deal with them in an appropriate manner.

Training courses completed while at Xmo Strata:

I had been working in the industry for several years prior to joining Xmo Strata and already had some of the qualifications necessary. Since joining Xmo Strata, I have completed the following: IOSH Managing Safely, CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme, Safety Passport (UK PIA), PASMA, IPAF, NPORS Slinger/Signaller/Banksman accreditation (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme).

A typical sign maintenance programme involves:

Attending sites within an agreed time and trying if possible to achieve a 'first time fix'.

Carrying out detailed, accurate surveys of what is needed and provide enough detail and photographs to the office so the work can be quoted properly. The job detail is then logged onto the XmoMan system and is used to identify proactive solutions to prevent continued call-outs for the same thing.

Problems that can arise on a sign maintenance project:

Our biggest problem is customers using several manufacturers to supply components which are not interchangeable. We then have to identify who made it, whether they are still in business and able to supply spare components, or alternatively source the materials from another supplier.

How I deal with any issues that arise on-site:

The priority of everyone at Xmo Strata is always safety, quality and productivity in that order. I always try to encourage engineers to ensure that the working environment is incident and injury free, and that repairs are completed as soon as possible.

The best thing about my job:

Knowing that I am supported 100% by the management team, and that messages relating to safety and quality are really meant; as opposed to just telling customers what they want to hear. This motivates me in my work in and gives me a lot of job satisfaction.

The worst thing about my job:

Emergency call-outs at 2am to say that signware is hanging off because a vehicle has hit it. I then have to get an engineer out of bed to go to the site and make-safe.

Why I wanted to work for Xmo Strata:

What really impressed me most about the company was its honesty, candour, and approach to safety and employee welfare.

Sum-up your job in 3 words:

Safety, quality, productivity (in that order).
