Xmo First Quarter Safety Review

22th April 2010

I am pleased to confirm that we've had our best ever start to a New Year by identifying 67 hazard spots/potential incidents/near misses and have suffered no accidents or incidents resulting in anyone being harmed. At the time of identification we were able to mitigate 34 potential hazards totally, and reduce the risk on a further 12 (a residual risk analysis is included later).

Analysis of our historic safety statistics indicates that the first quarter of our working year is the time when we are most likely to have an accident, hence a higher focus on health & safety than ever before.

It's no coincidence that increasing the quality of our site inductions and pre-start job meetings, supported by the delivery of more than 300 toolbox talks, has improved our performance and reporting to a higher level than we have achieved in any previous first quarter.

That said, I would urge you to remain alert to potential hazards and not fall asleep at the wheel. I would also like to say “well done” to everyone who has identified a potential hazard and addressed it at source or reported it - you have made a genuine difference!

The more potential hazards we identify and address at source, the less likely we (or the patrons on our sites) are to have an accident.

Below is our first quarter accident triangle which indicates a very robust base and shows just one incident relating to property damage. That said, it was a vehicle collision that had nothing to do with Xmo Strata and was totally beyond our control.

Accident Triangle

Below is a breakdown of how we managed to deal with the 67 hazard spots/potential incidents:

Residual Risk Analysis

34 Risk was mitigated at the time of discovery

12 Risk was controlled and reduced at the time of discovery, but further action is needed

8 Risk was brought to the attention of the person responsible at the time of discovery

3 Risk is being brought to the attention of the person responsible

3 No immediate action was necessary, long term action is needed

2 No action has been taken to control risk

7 Not applicable

Please continue the excellent work throughout the rest of the year and continue to make our sites safe places for our customers, their patrons and other contractors, even if the hazard you identify isn't anything to do with us. Each hazard that you address at source saves our customer the cost of calling another contractor out, adding genuine value to them and their business.
