Electrical Connections To BP Fascia
2nd May 2008
We have recently had two reported near misses concerning the cabling to BP fascia.
The first involved the cable being jointed inside the canopy, and the second where the cable had been trapped by the fascia.
Before carrying out any works on, or near, electrical cables, always isolate the power and lock it off (refer to bulletin 13 for the safe isolation procedure). This work should always be carried out by an electrician, in order to ensure correct isolation, to enable disconnection of the neutral conductor to prevent neutral-earth RCD tripping during the works, and to allow inspection of the circuits before work commences.
Where existing fascia lighting supply cables are located inside the canopy, these must be brought onto the canopy roof and left for the electricians to connect. The cables should be routed through the fascia by drilling 20mm holes and applying grommets to protect the cables, as shown below. Ensure the cable is not trapped behind the backing frame or the facia, and that all edges are protected.
If the cable is not long enough to reach the canopy roof, contact the appropriate Xmo Veritas electrician or your supervisor.
